Bafana Nhlapo was born in 1976 in Soweto, South Africa. His father being a noted member of the famous King Star Brothers, Bafana was raised with a love for music and artistic expression. Starting out at a young age in the vibrant poetry scene of Johannesburg, he quickly impressed his peers with his unusual choice of instrument. Bafana Nhlapo plays his own version of industrial percussion comprised of various household items he has collected over the years, particularly some old tin cups.
Staying true to his roots, Bafana sings mostly in his mother tongue isiZulu. Although a difficult language for many to understand, the emotions and message in his songs are beautifully communicated through his powerful falsetto voice. Bridging the traditional wailing sounds of Southern Africa with contemporary music styles such as afro, funk, jazz and rock, Bafana Nhlapo presents a modern expression of music that is funky, vibrant and above all spiritual.
His most successful endeavor to date is his 9-year tenure with Kwani Experience, recording two studio albums and receiving national nominations. After extensive touring with Kwani Experience in Europe and Africa, he embarked on launching his solo career. His reputation for extraordinary vocal and musical skills has earned him opportunities to share both stage and studio with well renowned artists such as the late Busi Mhlongo, Madala Kunene, Mutabaruka, Pops Mohamed, and Bugge Wesseltoft.
