The South West Asia/North Africa region is bubbling with new musical geographies awaiting to be discovered. The next generation of regional artists are creating fresh music in vivid resonance with their times, from popular shaabi and electro tarab to Arabic hip hop and gnawa big beats. In parallel, the scenes and sounds have been developing with music festivals, venues and international collaborations increasing in recent years. It is this range of artistic expression and sense of possibilities that Nabil Canaan will share during this talk. It will provide an overview of the sub-regions – Maghreb, Levant, Gulf – to give an idea of the main characteristics, cultural actors, touring opportunities, political context and impact of regional tensions on the arts scene.
