Fables and Legends: Indonesian Dance and Gamelan Orchestra!

  • Riksscenen
  • Doors: 12.30
  • Concert: 13.00

Few countries in the world have a greater diversity of music, dance, and vocal traditions than Indonesia. With more than 13,000 islands, almost every island has its own culture and language, resulting in countless variations of dance and music.

You will have the opportunity to experience this at Riksscenen when we welcome Javanese dancer Risa Nuriawati, accompanied by a gamelan orchestra from West Java and Rita Tila, one of the foremost vocalists in the traditional vocal music of Java.

Javanese dance is renowned for its exquisite and beautiful aesthetic, with stories drawn from the epic tales of the gods in the Mahabharata and Ramayana. She takes us on a journey through fables and legends where gods and demons engage in the eternal struggle between good and evil.

This is a colorful and highly visual performance featuring masks and beautiful choreography, suitable for families with children of all ages.

The Indonesian artists are part of a large musical collective in Java, bringing together musicians, composers, choreographers, and dancers under the direction of musician and composer Ismet Ruchimat. The concert is part of a larger collaborative project between Norwegian and Indonesian musicians presented at Oslo World. The project was initiated by musician and composer Patrick Shaw Iversen (flutes and electronics), who will also perform at Sunday’s children’s concert. He has worked with Indonesian musicians for more than 20 years and toured extensively throughout Asia and Europe in collaborative projects between Norwegian and Indonesian musicians.

The performance is a collaboration between Oslo World, Riksscenen, and the Indonesian Embassy in Oslo, which will also participate with the dance group Anak Indonesia.

The project is supported by the Composers’ Remuneration Fund (Komponistenes Vederlagsfond) and the Norwegian Composers’ Fund (Det Norske Komponistfond).
