A multi-faceted electronic firebrand from Lebanon, together with a local favourite.
Liliane Chlela
Producer, DJ and performer Liliane Chlela’s distinct sound treatment has made her an essential feature of the electronic and experimental scenes in Lebanon and the rest of the Middle East and North Africa today. She exhibits a multi-sensory flair for adventure, which has let her bring her work into diverse collaborations, making music for fashion films, interactive installations and performance art. She has a diverse and audacious sound palette, and is easily one of the most multifaceted female producers and musicians in the region today.
As a composer/producer and a hybrid DJ, Chlela approaches several music genres and explores the connections between improvisation and sonic manipulation. She has performed as a solo artist around the world, but has also made a name as a versatile and sought after collaborator, working with acts such as Mashrou’ Leila’s Hamed Sinno, the acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and composer Khyam Allami and Björn Meyer.
On her fourth and latest album, Safala, Chlela blends field-recordings, memories and incantations with new sounds. She has tried to tap into her personal heritage and the inherited oral traditions of her ancestors. Memories from Chlela’s grandmother intertwine with experiences from contemporary Beirut on the album. It was premiered at UK’s Tusk Festival. We are thrilled to be able to invite her to Oslo World this year, where she will be doing a club set at Jaeger alongside Acid Arab.
Helene Rickhard
Helene Rickhard has been making synth waves across Oslo over the past few years. With a penchant for enchanting melodies crafted from ancient electronic circuits and a primal rhythmic instinct, she’s garnered a reputation as one of Oslo’s more idiosyncratic DJs. Eighties synth wave, minimal wave, new world ambient and cosmic disco constitute her sets with her unique flair for the unusual and esoteric underpinning and thrives in the more obscure corners of early synthesizer music.
