For more than three decades, Los Plantronics have cultivated their own distinct musical universe at the intersection of surf rock, garage, rockabilly, mariachi and gritty rhythm & blues.
The Oslo band calls it “Mariachi Death Surf” – a cinematic blend where twangy guitars, horns and Latin American rhythms meet garage, boogaloo and spaghetti western.
Now, Los Plantronics are back with their first studio album since Surfing Times in 2015. The title ¡Maximum Mexican R'n'B! gives a good indication of where they are headed: the album can be heard as a fictional road trip through 1960s Mexico, from Baja California in the northwest to Yucatán in the southeast. Along the way, the music moves from desert atmospheres to tropical rhythms, via Tejano and Tex-Mex R'n'B in the border towns, mariachi from Guadalajara and garage beat from Mexico City.
¡Maximum Mexican R'n'B! will be released on October 30. The following day, Los Plantronics take over Parkteatret as part of Oslo World – with more than 30 years of Mariachi Death Surf behind them.
