Cultural meetings in music can yield great results at their best, and cringeworthy moments at their worst. How do you make it work? What are the pitfalls? How do you level the musical playing field between performers from different traditions?
In this panel, we meet four musicians who have tried to crack these codes: Mira Thiruchelvam premieres her work Pantone 448c with Cumin (Norge) during the festival together with Vestnorsk Jazzensemble. It is a meeting between carnatic classical music, pop and experimental improvisation. Last year, Marianna S. A. Røe fused mediterranean maqam based music with jazz, joik and everything in between on Spiti/Hjem with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. Thomas Kongshavn works as producer and band leader for Karpe, and encouraged the duo to dig deeper in their roots on last year’s Omar / Sheriff. Knut Reiersrud is a veteran on the Norwegian music scene and has experimented with meetings between all kinds of music for over 30 years.
