Raül Refree & Niño de Elche (Spania)

Genre bending Spanish duo exploring the ecstasy and agony of the existence

After their successful collaboration on the 2018 release Antología del Cante Flamenco Heterodoxo, Raül Refree and Niño de Elche have maintained an intense artistic relationship. When they perform together, unrepeatable moments occur - devoid of stylistic limits, always sincere and intense. Musically without, these encounters center around deep investigations of mystical writings and the light and darkness of our beliefs.

The singer Niño de Elche has dubbed himself as an “ex-flamenco artist”. He has managed to combine genres such as flamenco, free improvisation, krautrock or electronic, electroacoustic or contemporary music in his different projects, together with poetry, performance, dance and theatre. In 2019, he was the subject of director Sergi Camerons film “Niños Somos todos”, which documented a journey to Bolivia, where the artist searched for the roots of his music. Niño de Elche defies easy descriptions, an anarchist who dubs himself a queer artist, concerned with erasing genre borders, but who still refuses to call himself revolutionary. “I am less and less interested in the finished product”, he has explained in interviews. Rather, his music is a work in progress - creating ever new sparks of inspiration.

Raül Refree is the most acclaimed Spanish producer working today. Through his work with Rosalía, he has become the producer most associated with the so-called “new flamenco” movement. Last year, he performed at Oslo World, reimagining the fados of Amália Rodrigues together with the singer Lina. He has also collaborated with experimental musicians like Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth. He is also a noted songwriter and musician who has released 9 albums under his most personal project, Refree, he has scored several films, and his body of work as a producer is rapidly growing. His work is characterized by a huge sonic range, stretching from electronic adventures to intimate acoustic moments. Raül only understands music as an exercise in creation and research in freedom. In Niño de Elche, he has found a perfect partner.
