WORKSHOP: Baladi Dance with Khansa

Beirut-based Khansa is an award-winning multidisciplinary Lebanese artist who seamlessly merges music and dance to create dark, sensual electropop and captivating performances. As a gifted singer, songwriter, music maker and natural born dancer, Khansa defies traditional labels, drawing inspiration from a blend of cultural influences to skillfully reimagine age-old traditions for contemporary audiences. In an art form long associated with women only, Khansa is one of few male artists from the SWANA region breaking through and integrating baladi (Arabic folk dance) or belly dance and music together.

“The goal is to break stereotypes of classic, traditional Middle Eastern values regarding masculinity,” he says. Khansa is part of a long tradition of belly dancing that traces its origins back to Egypt and today has distinct styles there as well as in Turkey and Lebanon.
