A soulful mix of genres from an ambassadour of new, Brazilian music

There’s something seductive and wonderfully relaxed about Céus music; her pristine voice meandering over a blend of electronica and samba with a hint of reggae and dub lurking under the surface. Her playful yet intelligent mixture of musical styles, new and old, electronic and organic, Brazilian and American is a winning recipe. Combined with her extremely charismatic stage personality, Céu truly knows how to captivate an audience.

With her father being a composer and musicologist, Maria do Céu Whitaker Poças formed an early interest in the classical works of Brazils great composers Heitor Villa-Lobos, Ernesto Nazaré og Orlando Silva. By her late teens, she was performing on stage with major brazilian artists, and her first release “Céu” was nominated for both a latin and an american grammy as well as making her the best selling artist in Brazil in 2007. She is also one of the few Brazilian artists who have played at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California and who has had great international success with her releases. In fact, no Brazilian act has reached as high on the US Billboard since Astrud Gilberto’s “Girl From Ipanema” in ‘63.

After spending some time in New York, gathering inspiration and listening to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and american Hip Hop, Céu returned to Sáo Paulo and started several projects making samba-funk and electro-dance music. Soon being approached by several major labels, she finally signed with indie-label Urban Jungle, offering her the freedom of creativity she needed.

Join us at Cosmopolite on the 2nd of November as we welcome this amazing artist who has been named the ambassador of new Brazilian music.
