Retro and Daniel Gude reaches out across the divide to the thriving Techno scene happening on the other side of the Gaza wall despite or perhaps even because of the oppressive circumstances in which they find themselves. SAMA represents a new generation of Palestenian DJ currently setting the DJ circuit on fire combining the sounds of Techno and House with a middle eastern intonations through a burgeoning electronic music scene. Her Oslo counterpart Safira joins her in the booth for this Oslo world edition of Retro.
SAMA’ (previously named Skywalker) is the first Palestinian DJ and electronic music producer. Through the Skywalker phase of her career, she found her voice as a DJ in an esoteric Arab interpretation of Techno and House. In late 2018, SAMA’s Boiler Room performance and the associated documentary about the scene in Palestine went viral and more and more people are seeing that music has no boundaries. SAMA’ was recently listed in SheSaid. So’s Alternative Power 100 List, and plays a high-profile set at Ibiza’s World Heritage Site of Dalt Vila for the International Music Summit in late May.
Safira is a Norwegian/Palestinian dj based in Oslo. Making events under the Extra Delicious concept, focused on music in dark minimal and psychedelic Techno, she’s a regular fixture on the Oslo Dj scene making regular appearances in Jaeger’s booth, often with the Mandagsklubben crew.
