Festival guide: The Friday trip

What are you doing on Friday in week 44? If you’re really in the mood for a proper musical extravaganza, why not try the following route: Australian cult band Dirty Three, fronted by Bad Seeds member Warren Ellis, followed by the mysterious, experimental Andean-futurist duo Los Thuthanaka at Blå. A route that promises psychedelia, immersion and very good odds of achieving total concert bliss.

The noisy, joy-spilling adventures that make up Los Thuthanaka, the debut release by the duo of the same name, became a sensation when it came out last year. The album, available exclusively on Bandcamp, received rave reviews, and at the end of the year Pitchfork named it the best album of 2025. We’re not going to argue with that.

Los Thuthanaka feels like a statement of intent, an invitation to embrace experimentation and independent thinking in music. A potent blend of rhythms from the Andes, psychedelic rock, noise, field recordings, Aymara songs and more. According to the duo, the album was never sent for mastering, incorporating digital audio artefacts and static noise as part of its constantly shifting sonic tapestry. In a musical world increasingly crowded with déjà vus and exercises in nostalgia, Los Thuthanaka actually offers something resembling the shock of the new. And, of course, it’s also ridiculously catchy music.

“You’re never alone with Dirty Three,” Warren Ellis told a concert audience in London in December 2025. The wait was over – many years after their previous visit to Europe, the incomparable instrumental cult trio was back, bringing with them their 2024 release Love Changes Everything. This year, Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White are coming to Oslo World. There really is nothing quite like them. Dirty Three formed in Melbourne in 1992 and built a devoted international following with their instrumental rock, blending post-rock, folk and free jazz influences.

Their 90s albums Horse Stories and Ocean Songs earned widespread acclaim – but their more recent releases reveal a band digging even deeper. Through improvisation and interplay, they seek out the raw, emotional core of the music, and over the years, a very special bond has developed between the band and their devoted audience.
